Jazbyssinia Ethio-Jazz band
Bio
Jazbyssinia Ethio-Jazz Band is a dynamic ensemble based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Antwerp, Belgium, founded by musician and cultural ambassador Elias Mulugeta in 2016. The band is dedicated to reviving and reimagining the rich legacy of Ethio-jazz, blending traditional Ethiopian rhythms and scales with the improvisational spirit of jazz to create a sound that is both deeply rooted and refreshingly modern.
Under Elias’s leadership, Jazbyssinia crafts original compositions that fuse pentatonic melodies with jazz vocabulary and expressive improvisation. Their performances are celebrated for their vibrant energy, cultural authenticity, and ability to connect with audiences across borders.
The band has performed at major venues and cultural institutions in Ethiopia and abroad. Their debut album, “Greetings” (2021), introduced a new wave of Ethio-jazz to global listeners, earning praise for its innovative arrangements and emotional depth.
Jazbyssinia is more than a band—it’s a movement to celebrate Ethiopian musical heritage while pushing the boundaries of jazz. Whether on stage or in collaboration with artists from around the world, they bring a unique and compelling voice to the global jazz scene.
