Ddungu Athanans (born April 11, 1996), professionally known as Dat Montez, is a Ugandan Afrobeat musician, songwriter, and digital content creator. He is best known for his musical singles "Ole" and "Wakabi", as well as his viral comedic impressions and satirical character videos on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.
Early life and education
Dat Montez was born in Kampala, Uganda. He grew up in the Kawempe division of Kampala, where he completed his primary education. For his ordinary level (O-Level) secondary education, he attended Mityana Modern Senior Secondary School[1], later moving to Kawempe Royal College[2] for his advanced level (A-Level) studies.
He pursued higher education across several institutions, including Makerere University and Kampala University. To formalize his musical talents, he attended the ESOM School of Music in Kampala, where he trained in vocal performance and audio production.Audio Production[3]
Music career
Dat Montez began his professional music career in 2016. Singing primarily in Luganda, English, and Swahili, his style blends traditional Ugandan Afro-pop with modern Afrobeat rhythms.
During his early career development, he received mentorship and collaborative guidance from established Ugandan artists, notably the Afro-pop musician Sheebah Karungi.[4] This period of growth led to the studio recording and distribution of his prominent commercial singles, "Ole" and "Wakabi". His discography is distributed across global digital streaming platforms, including Spotify and SoundCloud.
Content creation
In addition to his music career, Dat Montez established a major digital footprint as a comedian and content creator. He achieved widespread recognition in East Africa through viral short-form videos on TikTok and YouTube. His content style relies heavily on comedic impressions, satirical imitations of public figures, and everyday social commentary.
