Jazz Invitation

Bio

Jazz Invitation has been existence for a number of years. The concept was originally conceived by drummer Sam Mataure, who invited various musicians to play at festivals around the country. The idea caught on like wildfire, as apart from having a wide appeal, it brought together musicians of varied styles and tastes. Mataure eventually left to play in South Africa, while Jazz Invitation continued with Kelly Rusike on bass, Victor Duarte on drums, Richie Lopez on saxophone and Manasa Mujawo and Filbert Marova on keyboards. They played the live circuit in Zimbabwe and cultivated a loyal following, spicing up the group with the sultry Prudence Katomeni on vocals.

The group’s debut CD. 'Rehearsal Room', was released in 2004 and was well received in Zimbabwe, also getting considerable airplay on Kaya FM in South Africa. Later, keyboard maestro Owen Chimuka joined the band to form a formidable combination with Kelly Rusike. Together they penned, produced and recorded Jazz Invitation's second CD, 'Tsoka'. Owen relocated to South Africa and was replaced by Bernie Bismarck, and later talented young keyboardist Tammy Chirema from the eastern town of Mutare. Other young additions to the band include drummer Dave Bekoe and vocalists Fungai Nengare, Tina Masawi and Courtney Rusike.
