Spotify introduces ‘Smart Reorder’ feature to enhance playlist transitions
Spotify has launched a new AI-driven playlist feature designed to improve transitions between tracks for Premium subscribers. The update, called Smart Reorder, automatically rearranges songs within a playlist based on their beats per minute (BPM) and musical key.
Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström.
The feature builds on Spotify’s custom transitions tool introduced last year, which enabled Premium users to create seamless transitions between songs. With Smart Reorder, users can reorganise playlists with a single tap. Subscribers can select the “Mix” option on a playlist, tap “Edit”, and choose Smart Reorder to automatically sort tracks according to BPM and key before saving the changes.
According to Spotify, users have streamed more than 220 hours of mixed playlists since custom transitions were introduced. Among the most frequently paired transitions are The Weeknd’s ‘Wake Me Up’ into ‘After Hours’, Flo Rida’s ‘Low’ into Rihanna’s ‘S&M’, Sean Paul’s ‘No Lie’ into Coldplay’s ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’, and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘euphoria’ into Skepta and Playboi Carti’s ‘TOXIC’.
In addition to the new tool, Spotify has launched a “Mixed By” hub showcasing curated playlists from artists including John Summit, Becky G, Normani, Beele, Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn of Linkin Park, Odeal, GroovyRoom and Monte Booker.
Previously, the mixed playlist feature allowed users to view the BPM and key of individual tracks when using the Mix function. The Smart Reorder update automates this process, reducing the need for manual curation.
Mixed playlists can be shared with other users, and both the transition editor and Smart Reorder function are available for collaborative playlists. Spotify also continues to offer a built-in cover art editor, introduced in 2024, allowing users to customise artwork for their playlists.
The update reflects Spotify’s broader use of AI tools to refine playlist personalisation and user engagement within its streaming platform.
