Open call: SAMRO 2026 Music Publisher Programme
The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has opened applications for its 2026 Music Business Lab (MBL) Publisher Programme, a professional development initiative aimed at strengthening music publishing capacity within South Africa’s music sector.
The application deadline is 9 March.
The programme forms part of SAMRO’s corporate social investment (CSI) activities and is intended to support emerging music publishers, independent label owners and self-published members by improving business skills, publishing knowledge and long-term commercial sustainability.
Programme purpose
The MBL Publisher Programme was established in response to ongoing challenges in the music publishing sector, including gaps in business skills, professionalisation and sustainable growth. It focuses on enabling participants to better manage and exploit intellectual property, improve royalty income streams and build resilient music enterprises.
Programme overview
- A structured learning programme running over six weeks
- Estimated weekly commitment of 8 to 10 hours
- Delivered entirely online
- Open to songwriters, composers and emerging music entrepreneurs
- A total of 50 bursaries will be awarded to eligible SAMRO members
Key focus areas
Participants will receive practical training in:
- Music publishing fundamentals and copyright
- Royalty streams, revenue flows and rights administration
- Publishing agreements and contract literacy
- Metadata management, registrations and rights best practice
- Local and international exploitation opportunities
- Sustainable catalogue and publishing strategies
Eligibility criteria
The programme is open to SAMRO full and associate Members who:
- Are actively creating or exploiting musical works
- Seek to deepen their understanding of music publishing
- Demonstrate commitment to professional development and industry participation
- Have not received SAMRO CSI support in the past three years

- Facilitated by experienced music industry practitioners
- Delivered through online workshops, masterclasses and practical case studies
- Designed to combine technical knowledge with real-world application
Selection process
Admission is competitive and merit-based. Applications will be evaluated against published eligibility criteria, with final participants selected through an objective assessment process.
