Zim: Mellow Creme releases remake of '90s hit True Love
Zimbabwean hip hop musician Mellow Creme has released his cover song of the '90s Zimbabwean pop classic ‘True Love’ by Busi Ncube and Ilanga.
The cover is now available on various music streaming platforms including iTunes, Deezer, Spotify and Tidal, among others.
The song is a dedication to Mellow Creme’s wife and an ode to Zimbabwean music, and it follows the musician's typical raps, which are centred around love and pan-Africanism. 'True Love' features fellow Zimbabwean vocalist and guitarist Carlo Music. It was recorded by producer David Sengwayo in Zimbabwe.
Mellow Creme says the remake was inspired by his relentless passion to showcase the best music from Zimbabwe in an era that has seen African hip hop and pop music dominated by Nigerian and South African influences.
"We are living in an unpredictable time where we question everything around us including the relationships and values that used to exist in the past,” he said. “True Love is laced with poetry that you can recite to your loved one, be they your husband, wife, bae, sibling, child or grandparents. A song fit for a wedding it is also perfect for a goofy Sunday afternoon with those you care about.”
On ‘True Love’, Mellow Creme takes a slight departure from his typical compositions by introducing the fusion of more authentic Zimbabwean sounds.
“There’s nothing like a fresh perspective of classic Zimbabwean music to remind us of our resilience and rich music culture that resonates throughout generations,” he said.
The musician is working on his upcoming album Fruits of My Roots, which is expected to be released next year. In 2016, he dropped his debut album Mellow Madness, which was followed by the Mellowdramatic Vol 1 mixtape and Theory of Nakedivity album in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The lyric video for 'True Love' is now available and features an animation of handmade paper art, which narrates a love story between two giraffes that kiss through the seasons of time.
