Chitedze, who passed away on 27 November 2011 in South Africa following a battle with cancer, was widely acclaimed for his innovative blend of hip hop and R&B with local languages and gospel themes.
“We chose to honour Wisdom as he was one of the pioneers of raw gospel-fused hip-hop,” UMP Festival CEO, Aisha DeSilva, said. “His music was a light for young people, offering hope for their country, future, and lives. Songs like ‘Tipewe’ highlighted how youth could take charge in fighting the HIV pandemic and build a healthier Malawi.”
Throughout his musical career, Chitedze collaborated with several influential Malawian artists including David Kalilani, Dominant One, Prolifik, Erasto, and Mike Munthali (Dynamike). His lyrical depth and socially conscious messages earned him widespread respect and admiration within Malawi’s music and cultural spheres.
Born on 29 March 1979 in Blantyre District, Malawi, Wisdom Chitedze is remembered not only for his contributions to music, but also for his unwavering commitment to uplifting his community and embodying values of integrity, faith, and compassion. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Chitedze, and their two sons, Keltaro and Keevan.
Meanwhile, the 2025 UMP Festival will be held from 21 to 27 October in Cape Maclear. Family, fans, and the wider public are invited to join in celebrating Chitedze’s enduring legacy. The newly renamed Wisdom Stage will be the central platform for performances by artists inspired by his work, while the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to his family in a special tribute ceremony.
