Spotify launches Khuphuka nathi to celebrate Zulu pride, heritage
Spotify has launched a new cultural initiative titled Khuphuka nathi kuSpotify, aimed at celebrating Zulu identity, pride and musical heritage.
- The initiative pays homage to KwaZulu-Natal’s vibrant legacy of rhythmic storytelling, traditional music, fashion, language, and unshakeable community spirit.
Announced on 4 June, the campaign is rooted in the isiZulu phrase “Kube ngangemZulu ngayini” – which translates to “Who would I be if not Zulu” – a powerful expression of selfhood, community and cultural belonging.
The initiative pays homage to KwaZulu-Natal’s (KZN) vibrant legacy of rhythmic storytelling, traditional music, fashion, language, and unshakeable community spirit. More than just a geographical location, KZN is presented as a way of life – deeply rooted in pride and tradition.
According to Spotify, the platform’s mission is to connect people through the universal language of music. With Khuphuka nathi kuSpotify, the streaming service is spotlighting Zulu culture while offering a wide-ranging catalogue that celebrates diverse African and global sounds.
As part of the campaign, Spotify is launching a hero film – a short cinematic piece that takes viewers on a musical journey exploring themes of identity, belonging and cultural pride. The platform is also curating a selection of playlists that showcase the depth of Zulu music, ranging from traditional beats to modern genres like gqom, amapiano and hip hop.
“Khuphuka nathi kuSpotify is a love letter to our Zulu-speaking users,” Spotify head of marketing for sub-Saharan Africa Sithabile Kachisa said. “This initiative is about celebrating what it means to be Zulu – the pride, the identity and the sense of community. We believe music is one of the most powerful ways to express this, and we are proud to be part of that journey.”
The campaign underscores Spotify’s continued investment in African markets and its efforts to reflect and promote the continent’s rich and diverse musical cultures. The initiative is now live on Spotify, with the hero film and curated playlists accessible to users globally.
