Soweto Rock Festival kicks off with a bang in inaugural edition
The inaugural Soweto Rock Festival took place on 31 January 2026, bringing together bands from Soweto and beyond for a night of pulsating live rock music. Despite the challenges facing the local rock scene, the festival succeeded in delivering an energetic and memorable experience.
Automatic performed at the event.
The festival was conceived in 2009 but only materialised 17 years later. Its aim is clear: to create a dedicated space for Soweto rock music, connect musicians with their community, and provide performance opportunities for emerging bands. “This festival was born to create a space for the expression and enjoyment of Soweto rock,” said Festival Director Nathi Louw. “We rarely get programmed into live music events, and the rock festival circuit is getting smaller and less accessible. This festival is for emerging acts, and we hope to build something that will outlive me.”
Held at Sawubona Music Jam in Chiawelo, Soweto, the festival operated without official partners or sponsors. “The aim was to host the festival, capture it on video, and use that success to advocate for funding or attract partners in the future,” Louw explained.
The line-up was extensive and diverse, featuring 20 bands spanning three decades of South African rock. Legendary acts such as Wonderboom and The Black Cat Bones shared the stage with established and emerging groups, including Reeburth, Shameless Band, Twenty One Children, GSAND Orkestrae featuring Linda, Drain Brain Experience, The Burnouts, Aura Electric, Musa Zwane, Dynasty House, Topia, Ganga Jaji, Double ‘D, Sons of Solomon, DMDC, and Automatic.
The audience response reflected the festival’s impact. “Thank you so much for bringing back memories. I still remember the Rock Therapy sessions back in the day. I really loved the experience. Looking forward to the next one,” said festival-goer Mamaki “Aza” Rankotsoana.
Looking ahead, Louw expressed optimism for growth. “Imagine if we could pull this off with absolutely no funding, now imagine the heights we can reach with sponsorship. We aim to make this an annual and larger festival, and we are actively seeking partners and sponsors to make that possible.”
The successful first edition of the Soweto Rock Festival demonstrated the resilience and passion of the local rock community. With determination and support, the festival has the potential to become a significant fixture on South Africa’s live music calendar.
