Sheer Publishing rebrands as Downtown Music Africa
After nearly 30 years as one of Africa’s most respected independent music publishers, Sheer Publishing Africa has officially rebranded as Downtown Music Publishing Africa (DMP Africa).

The move, effective 27 May, represents more than a name change, it signals a strategic transformation aligning Africa’s music rights management with Downtown Music’s global expertise and infrastructure.
Founded in 1996, Sheer Publishing Africa built a formidable legacy representing artists across genres such as amapiano, Afro-jazz, kwaito, and hip hop. That legacy now continues under the Downtown banner, with a renewed focus on innovation, transparency, and global reach.
“This is a transformational moment, not only for us but for music rights management across the continent,” Downtown Music Publishing Africa managing director Thando Makhunga said. “Our new name reflects our ability to plug directly into Downtown’s global expertise while staying rooted in the nuances of the African music landscape.”
Global vision, local leadership
DMP Africa will benefit from Downtown’s expansive international network, which administers rights in 145 countries. The company gains access to cutting-edge technology, world-class royalty administration, and enhanced client services—tools designed to maximise the earning potential of African creators while meeting the needs of international rights holders operating in and beyond the continent.
Through this rebrand, DMP Africa becomes the first African publisher to implement Curve, Downtown’s global royalty accounting system, which offers creators real-time access to earnings and unmatched transparency. The company also plans to roll out Neighbouring Rights Administration services, introducing new income streams for performers and rights holders across Africa.
In addition, DMP Africa will move away from outdated contract models, introducing flexible, creator-centric agreements tailored to individual career goals.
Already, DMP Africa’s expanded scope is reflected in its growing roster of international clients and collaborators. These include major global publishers such as Warner Chappell and Concord, as well as independent companies including Sintonia (Angola), Vuga Music (Nigeria/US), Murmure Publishing (France), Bucks Music Group (UK), and Saregama (India), one of South Asia’s most established music houses.
These partnerships underscore DMP Africa’s ability to manage the increasingly complex demands of global rights holders engaging with African markets, while also amplifying African catalogues on the world stage.
Redefining music publishing in Africa
“The rebrand isn’t just cosmetic, it’s about redefining what it means to be a music publishing partner in Africa,” Makhunga said. “African music is shaping the global sound, and we’re here to ensure that royalty flows across borders, giving creators the remuneration and respect they deserve.”
Downtown Music Publishing president Emily Stephenson said: “Africa is one of the most dynamic creative regions in the world. Through DMP Africa, we are investing not just in infrastructure, but in long-term relationships that will shape the future of the music industry.”
Downtown Music CEO Pieter van Rijn said: “This marks an important new chapter in our presence across Africa—a region rich in creativity, culture, and talent. By combining local expertise with global access, we will ensure that talent from across the African diaspora is recognised and rewarded on a global scale.”
The road ahead
While the brand has evolved, DMP Africa’s core values remain unchanged. The same dedicated team will continue to offer client-first service and deep knowledge of the African music ecosystem.
“We’ve always rooted for the creator, the producer, the songwriter, and the record label,” Makhunga said. “Now we’ve got the global partners to go even further, for our creators, our culture, and our future.”
