Nigeria: Davido concert cancelled due to COVID-19 spikes
Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido on 16 December announced the decision to cancel his DMW Live in Concert event due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.
The singer announced the news on Instagram citing COVID-19 safety concerns.
“Following increased and overwhelming concerns with the rise of COVID-19 cases in Lagos, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Davido Presents DMW Live In Concert initially scheduled to take place on 28 December," Davido wrote. "The health and well-being of our fans, employees and artists is of paramount importance so whilst we are disappointed, we know it is the right thing to do.
“Thank you to everyone that purchased tables. Your support brought us way closer to sold-out status than we expected in a very uncertain time! We look forward to bringing you a DMW live in concert in the very near future. In the meantime, stay safe, sanitised and socially distanced. Thank you for your understanding and Merry Christmas in advance.”
The event is among other shows that were recently cancelled due to the hike in COVID-19 cases.
LiveSpot360 has suspended its 2020 Livespot X-Clusive showcase, which Wizkid, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Simi were to headline.
“Within the last few days, we have observed an aggressive increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, and we are strongly convinced that it is in our collective interest that we postpone the Livespot X-Clusive Concert Xperience slated for 19 and 20 December," LiveSpot360 chief creative director Dare Art Alade said.
"We know how much the fans needed to let their hair down especially after a tough year, which makes this decision all the more difficult. Regardless of our thorough health and safety protocol which we had put in place, we know that this is the right thing to do at this critical time in our fight against the virus. Ensuring the safety of our fans remains a priority.”
Nigeria now has more than 75 000 reported COVID-19 cases and 1 200 related deaths. About a week ago, the Buhari-led country also broke its record for the highest cases of the coronavirus reported in one day with 796 new infections. Meanwhile, the Nigerian government on Wednesday said that the country could procure COVID-19 vaccines by the end of January 2021.
