Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival returns to Nkhotakota for 2025 edition
The Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival will return to Fish Eagle Bay Lodge in Nkhotakota from 17 to 19 October 2025, following its 20th anniversary celebration last year.
- Local act Madalitso Band has been announced as the first cultural headliner for 2025.
The organisers say the upcoming edition will continue to highlight creativity, culture and community engagement, maintaining the event’s reputation as one of Africa’s most recognised cultural festivals.
“Our work here is far from over,” festival organiser and executive director of DOPE Malawi, Sharmila Elias-Taijala said. “The festival was originally conceived to support the growth and development of Malawi’s hidden treasures by attracting tourists to its breath-taking landscapes and lake shores. It aims to showcase Malawi’s warm-heart culture and world-class talent, shaping a positive narrative about the country for the media. In doing so, it continues to empower local communities surrounding the festival venues, celebrate our gifts with the world, and enhance Malawi’s global competitiveness and cultural legacy, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
“The festival has made a tangible difference in Nkhotakota, boosting the hospitality industry, driving development, and uplifting the local community. We feel compelled to return, not only to build on our vision but also to celebrate the progress we’ve made.”
Established in 2004, Lake of Stars has become a fixture in Malawi’s cultural calendar. It has helped to promote local talent, supported youth development, and influenced perceptions of the country in regional and international media. According to organisers, the 2018 edition contributed an estimated $2 million to the Malawian economy.
The festival has built a reputation for bringing together local and international performers across genres and disciplines. In addition to music, the event includes visual arts, storytelling, dance and family-friendly programming. The lakeside setting offers a backdrop for cultural exchange and creative exploration.
Environmental and social impact remains a focus. In a recent initiative, 100 school desks were donated to Nkhotakota schools using materials recycled from the festival’s stages. The project received international attention and was featured in a 2025 UNESCO research paper, Harnessing Southern Africa’s Arts and Cultural Festivals for Sustainable Development, presented at the MTN Bushfire Festival in eSwatini.
The 2025 edition will include more than 70 acts across different genres. Performances will range from traditional Malawian music and folklore to modern styles such as pop and rock steady. Cultural elements such as Mangelengele rhythms, kwela, and gule wamkulu are expected to feature prominently.
The first headliner announced for 2025 is the Malawian folk duo Madalitso Band, known for their handmade instruments and uplifting sound. The group has performed at international festivals including Glastonbury, WOMAD, Sauti za Busara and MTN Bushfire.
“It’s very exciting, considering back in 2019 we were just a smaller band, featuring in the background,” said Madalitso Band manager Neil Nayar. “We’ve had so much success with festivals around the world — Glastonbury, WOMAD, Sauti Za Busara, MTN Bushfire — so to bring it all back home at Lake of Stars is absolute magic. Can’t wait to share this with our own people! Our own home!”
The group has released two albums under Swiss label Bongo Joe Records and is currently featured in a documentary project.
As preparations continue for Lake of Stars 2025, organisers say the focus remains on artistic growth, economic development, and celebrating Malawi’s cultural identity.
