Directed by the celebrated Mpho Molepo, with choreography by Nompumelelo Gumede-Ngema, the Broadway-renowned production returns with renewed energy and purpose. Known for its powerful storytelling and vibrant musicality, Sarafina! explores a defining moment in South Africa’s history, set against the backdrop of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
Originally conceived and directed by the late Mbongeni Ngema, the musical remains a cultural touchstone. Ngema also composed and arranged the score, with additional songs by the late jazz legend Hugh Masekela. The story centres on the students of Morris Isaacson High School, where approximately 200 000 black learners rose in protest against the apartheid regime’s Bantu Education system.
This new staging aims to inspire and empower today’s youth while paying tribute to the women who played critical roles in the liberation struggle. Timed to coincide with Women’s Month, the production highlights the resilience and sacrifices of South Africa’s unsung heroines.
Sarafina! is more than a musical, it is a moving celebration of courage, resistance, and the ongoing fight for justice.
Tickets are available at Joburg Theatre’s official box office and website.
