Bio
ZULI (Ahmed El Ghazoly) is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ from Cairo, Egypt, and a pivotal figure in the city’s underground electronic and hip-hop scenes. Currently based in Berlin, his music is known for its experimental blend of techno, jungle, grime, and glitch, often featuring intricate sound design and shifting rhythms.
Key Projects and Career Highlights:
- Solo Work: He gained international acclaim with his debut LP, Terminal (2018), which was named the second-best album of the year by The Wire. His more recent work includes the EP All Caps (2021) and the album Lambda (2024).
- Collectives and Venues: He co-founded the influential Kairo Is Koming (KIK) collective and the VENT club in Cairo, which served as a major alternative music hub between 2013 and 2015.
- irsh: Together with Rama, he runs irsh, a platform and label that curates events and releases music from Cairo's experimental scene.
- Media Presence: ZULI has hosted a monthly show on NTS Radio since 2016. His tracks have received support from electronic heavyweights like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Ben UFO.
Style and Influence:
ZULI's sound is characterized by a "broken" and "distorted" aesthetic. While his early EPs were more club-focused, his later work often moves into more abstract, cinematic, and exploratory territories, frequently collaborating with Egyptian rappers like Abyusif. He also releases music under the alias Swag Lee
