Zimbo Jam

Zimbo Jam is one of Zimbabwe's leading lifestyle, arts and culture website. It was founded by Fungai Tichwangana in 2008 and it features daily updates, an events calendar, video and photo galleries. Unlike other websites, the organization has focused on telling the other side of the country’s story; that of its triumphant arts and culture sector. The site has been hacked a few times, closed for non-payment of hosting fees several times. It has thus struggled to become a self-sustaining business in a country whose economic environment is very harsh.

In 2010, 2013 and 2014, Zimbo Jam was awarded the National Arts Merit Award (NAMA) for Outstanding Online Arts Publisher. Its journalists have been invited to contribute on international fora, such as the Highway Africa New Media Awards, the CNN Africa Journalist of the Year Awards and even a session on internet freedom at the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland. In June 2015, its founder was selected by the Nieman Foundation for the 2016 Neiman Fellows. The Nieman Foundation has educated more than 1,400 accomplished journalists from 93 countries since 1938.
