Willom Tight

Bio

Willom Tight is a popular singer-songwriter whose music can be best described as contemporary, Afro-centric soul. He sings in Shona interspersed with some English, and his lyrics often have special or hidden messages. He is gifted with a deep, powerful voice plus a talent for writing songs that reflect on the daily life and struggles of the people. Most of his songs focus on the social and economic issues that govern people's daily lives. He has been heavily influenced by Chimurenga, the genre pioneered by Thomas Mapfumo and inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira, and also incorporates pop influences such as South African mbaqanga, Zimbabwean Jit and reggae.

Born Wilbroad Muponda on 15 March 1971 in Harare's Tafara township, he joined Tafara Primary School's traditional dance group, and later the senior choir and the drama club. In 1992 he joined a band called Bisas Combination, where he stayed until 1994, before moving to Nexus Talent Agents between 1995 and 1996. In 1997 Willom was involved in the formation of another group, Mateo & Friends, where he stayed until 1999. In 2000 Willom founded the Tight Family, who recorded the album 'Ndinoda Wangu' that year. Between 2003 and 2006 he worked with Dino Mudondo, and in 2010 featured on Oliver Mtukudzi's album 'Tuku & Friends'. Willom has released five solo albums to date: 'Ndinoda Wangu' (2000), 'Hodzeko' (2003), 'Kuzangoma' (2008), 'Chinyerere' (2012) and 'Manifesto' (2014).
