Wendy Shay

Bio

Wendy Asiamah Addo (born 20 February 1996), professionally known as Wendy Shay, is a Ghanaian singer and performer. In March 2021, she was listed among the Top 30 Most Influential Women in Music at the 3Music Awards Women’s Brunch, recognising her impact on Ghana’s contemporary music industry.

She was born in Accra, Ghana, to parents from Obo, Kwahu in the Eastern Region. After her father passed away when she was four, she relocated with her three siblings to Stuttgart, Germany, an experience that deepened her early connection to music. Wendy attended Morning Star School and St. Martin de Porres in Accra before continuing her education in Germany, where she also trained at a music school in Bernhausen.

Before fully committing to music, Wendy Shay trained professionally as a nurse and worked as a midwife in Germany. Her passion for music, however, remained strong, and in January 2018 she was introduced to Bullet, manager of RuffTown Records, and signed to the label following the passing of Ebony Reigns. On 1 June 2018, she released her debut single “Uber Driver,” produced by MOG Beatz, marking her breakthrough into Ghana’s mainstream music scene.

Wendy Shay was later enstooled as Ahenemba Hemaa of Gomoa Afransi in Ghana’s Central Region, receiving the stool name Queen Ewurabena Ofosuhemaa Shay I, in recognition of her cultural and social influence. She also serves as a brand ambassador for Ghana’s Youth Employment Agency (YEA), a role she retained despite earlier controversy.

She has performed at major events including the Miss Ghana 2018 Finals, RTP Awards Africa, the BF Suma Ghana Connect Concert, and the Afro Nation Music Festival in 2019. Wendy Shay was named Discovery of the Year at the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and has received numerous accolades, including Breakthrough Artist of the Year, New Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards SA, Best New Artiste at the Ghana–Naija Showbiz Awards, and Video of the Year at the Eastern Music Awards. In 2022, her performance at the Ghana Culture Festival in Belgium was interrupted by police, highlighting the visibility and international reach of her work
