Wela Matomela

Bio

Wela Matomela was born in Uitenhage in 1949, he is a revered multi-instrumentalist whose career serves as a living roadmap of South African musical heritage. A self-taught prodigy who mastered the pennywhistle during the kwela boom of the 1950s, Matomela transitioned into the vocal jazz scene of the early 60s, drawing inspiration from both local legends like Spokes Mashiyane and international harmonisers like the Delta Rhythm Boys. His formative years in the Eastern Cape laid the foundation for a lifetime of artistic excellence, establishing him as a versatile force proficient in vocals, drums, and piano.

The 1970s marked a period of prolific collaboration that propelled Matomela into the national spotlight. From his early theatrical work at Lovedale Teachers College to forming the Village Arts Quartet with trumpeter Duke Ngcukana, his ability to bridge regional scenes was unmatched. His relocation to Cape Town saw him sharing stages with titans like Victor Ntoni and Cups Nkanuka, before he eventually joined the legendary Soul Jazzmen in Port Elizabeth. This era, defined by high-profile SABC recordings and television appearances, cemented his reputation as a premier jazz technician and a cornerstone of the Eastern Cape’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Beyond his personal accolades, Matomela’s legacy is defined by his commitment to mentorship and the evolution of the genre. Whether exploring gospel with The Loving Waters or founding The Fellowship Choir, which launched the careers of stars like Loyiso Bala and Asanda Bam, he has consistently invested in the next generation of South African talent. Today, he remains a vital figure in the Port Elizabeth music scene, performing alongside his son, Khanya Matomela, in the jazz outfit Welaz Kabah. With recent albums like Endikindeni and Intaba ka Vuba, Wela Matomela continues to prove that his creative spark is as enduring as the history he helped write.
