Bio

Wazimbo (born Humberto Carlos Benfica, 11 November 1948) is a legendary Mozambican vocalist and one of the most influential figures in marrabenta music. Widely regarded as one of the greatest voices in Mozambique, he rose to prominence as the lead singer of Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique, helping to define a rich, soulful sound characterised by vibrant rhythms, electric instrumentation, and powerful horn arrangements.

Beginning his career in the 1960s with groups such as Silverstars and Geiziers, Wazimbo later worked with Rádio Moçambique’s big band before achieving national and international success. His work with Orchestra Marrabenta Star led to European tours and acclaimed releases on Germany’s Piranha label.

He is best known for his iconic ballad “Nwahulwana” (1988), which gained global recognition through international film and advertising placements, cementing his legacy beyond Africa.

With a career spanning several decades, Wazimbo remains a defining voice in Mozambican music, celebrated for his emotive delivery and lasting cultural impact.
