Wamugunda
Bio
Wamugunda Mwangi, known mononymously as Wamugunda, is a Nairobi-based singer and songwriter whose acoustic-driven, folk-inspired music stands out for its raw honesty and lyrical depth. Singing in Swahili, English and his Native Gĩkũyũ, Wamugunda weaves heartfelt narratives through simple melodies and a voice marked by a distinct raspy tone. His sound blends indie folk with subtle elements of benga and traditional East African rhythms, evoking a timeless quality that is both intimate and familiar.
Wamugunda's songs are reflections on guilt, grief, love, and the quiet struggles of the modern artist. Rooted in vulnerability and truth, his music connects deeply with listeners seeking sincerity in sound and story.
Influenced by the poetic lyricism of José González, the timeless storytelling of Bob Dylan, the acoustic depth of Harry Kimani, and the cultural grounding of Daudi Kabaka and Joseph Kamaru, Wamugunda began his journey as a self-taught musician. He honed his craft performing in Nairobi’s coffeehouses, small venues, and indie festivals, gradually carving a space for himself within the city’s evolving music scene.
In 2018, he signed with Far Near Music and released his debut EP, gaining recognition for his distinctive voice and evocative songwriting. Since 2020, Wamugunda has continued to perform and record as an independent artist, committed to sharing the beauty of well-crafted lyrics and the natural tones of acoustic music with wider audiences.
