Tsholofelo

Bio

Young, African, seasoned singer-song writer Tsholofelo is nothing short of a wonder in the alternative music world. She was born in Richards Bay, North Coast of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province in South Africa, later relocating with her parents as a young girl to the city of lights, Johannesburg. Eclectic is a word she says best describes her sound, and as with many musicians, Tsholofelo passionately confesses that music has always been an escapism and a form of teleportation to which she’s connected with from as young as she can remember.

“I remember the day my family found out I could actually sing. I was chilling at home with three of my cousins who happened to be avid Beyoncé fans, we all were. Anyway, they would pretend to be holding microphones and they’d sing along, I then also joined in the singing, to which they stopped and asked who just sang? I felt shy because I thought I was messing the song up, then they asked me to sing and I did the next thing they ran to the other room to call my mother who then made me sing solo for them. I think that pretty much covers the beginning of my life as a musician."

Tsholofelo studied music formally at the University of KwaZulu Natal, where she obtained her BA Music degree, BA Hons Music (cum laude) and has currently enrolled for her Master of Arts in popular music. Her sound is largely influenced by the alternative/urban r&b/soul soundscape, jazz, indie/folk music etc. Her sonic inspirations include Robert Glasper, Lianne La Havas, Adele, Laura Mvula, the list goes on. Because of the vastness of this soundscape, she has worked tirelessly towards creating music just as broad, just as honest and just as authentic as her innermost being. She is a seasoned artist who has been involved in the Durban music scene as a solo performer for quite some time. Among her most notable performances are; the KZNSA Gallery where she opened for SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominated all female jazz band, Heels Over Head, popular Durban music venues such as the Jazzy Rainbow, The Bat Center, and UKZN’s prestigious Jazz Center. Furthermore, she has performed in Johannesburg’s Regenesys Business School during the “Billionaires Under Construction conference”, at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria for a crowd of over 3,000 on the same stage as international investor, speaker, and author, Robert Kiyosaki, but to name a few. Most recently, Tsholofelo was selected to perform at The 45th National Arts Festival 2019 that takes place in Makhanda (formerly known as Grahamstown) as part of the Fringe Contemporary Music programme.
