Bio

Sponch Makhekhe, born Munty Derrick Maseko, is a versatile South African musician from Mzimhlophe in Soweto. Widely known by his nicknames Sponch, Sponch Cakes, or Kakes, his stage name carries a deeply personal story rooted in his childhood. The name “Sponch Makhekhe” was given to him by his grandmother after he suffered burns from a kettle while trying to reach sponge cakes on a kitchen counter. The name stuck among his peers, eventually becoming the identity he embraced for his musical career.

Sponch Makhekhe’s passion for music was inspired by his admiration for Kwaito star Mzambiya, whose success at a young age left a lasting impression on him. He later received mentorship from the well-known Kwaito group Alaska, traveling with them on tours and learning the fundamentals of songwriting and performance. His early experiences in the industry were further shaped through studio sessions with acclaimed DJ and producer DJ Kent, which led to the release of his debut radio single, “Uvukile Umalambane.”

Originally emerging as a Kwaito artist, Sponch Makhekhe has since evolved into a dynamic and adaptable musician. He has successfully expanded his sound into Afro-House and, more recently, Amapiano, showcasing his ability to remain relevant within South Africa’s ever-changing music landscape. His lyrical style blends classic Kwaito elements with modern vernacular hip-hop influences, creating a unique and authentic sound.

This versatility is evident in tracks such as “Khululeka,” alongside DJ Big Sky and BosPianii, where he fuses rhythmic storytelling with infectious hooks. In contrast, songs like “Ubusuku Bonke” with BosPianii highlight his ability to connect with soulful audiences through emotive delivery and melodic depth.
