Speedy: From Kwaito Pioneer to Screen Star
Harold Matlhaku, popularly known as Speedy, is a South African kwaito and R&B artist whose career took off as one of the founding members of the afro-pop powerhouse Bongo Maffin. The group’s rise in 1997 cemented his place in the local music scene, making him a household name. After achieving fame with Bongo Maffin, Speedy eventually left to pursue a solo career, exploring his unique sound and further establishing himself as an influential artist.
Beyond music, Speedy has made a significant mark on South African television. He is widely recognized for his role as Deep in the first three seasons of the SABC1 drama series Gaz’lam (2002–2005). He also appeared on the e.tv sitcom SOS in 2001 and made a cameo as himself on the youth-focused soap Backstage in 2006. His on-screen presence extends to film, with a role in the 2002 feature Hijack Stories.
From the stage to the screen, Speedy remains a versatile figure in South African entertainment, bridging the worlds of kwaito, R&B, and acting with a style all his own.
