Sophia Shorai

Bio

Sophia Shorai is a Zimbabwean born musician and songwriter based in Minneapolis in the U.S. She was born in 1982. She is known for her music which revolves around jazz, pop, alt-Country and electro soul. She was born in Zimbabwe and raised in the U.S. It was in Menneapolis where her music career began to take shape.

Shorai is largely a jazz musician, whose enthusiastic and prominent voice has been featured in commercials, television series and film. She studied music at the age of five, and has been playing on the local scene for virtually her entire life. Shorai has covered numerous bands commercially, including The Beatles, and original music explores themes ranging from inner challenges to social justice.

On 19 August 2010, she released called ‘Long As You Are’ which had songs such as ‘Long As You Are’, ‘Black Coffee’, ‘Brother, Can You Spare a Dime’, You Don’t Know What Love Is’, ‘Old Devil Moon’, ‘Everybody Knows’ and others. This was followed by an album titled ‘Try’ (2014). The music project featured the following tracks ‘Couples’, ‘Don’t Call’, ‘Stars’, ‘Try’ and others.

Educated at Perpich Center for the Arts High School in Golden Valley, Shorai is no stranger to music competitions. In 2003, she beat out several far better-known acts in a demo contest sponsored by Grammy Award organizers at First Avenue. She auditioned in Chicago for Idol in 2009.

She graduated from the Perpich Center for Arts Education in 2000 and studied psychology at the University of Minnesota. She has performed at various venues around the Twin Cities for the past several years, including the Dakota, Hell's Kitchen and the Nicollet Island Inn.
