Hailing from Johannesburg, SojoKoto is an all-queer trio known for their unique blend of musical styles that traverse roots, folk, singer-songwriter, and traditional African music. The band's name, derived from Hindu slang "Sojo" meaning extraordinary, and "Koto," a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, encapsulates their ethos - "extraordinary instrument." This name reflects the group’s dedication to creating music that transcends cultural boundaries and speaks directly to the soul.
SojoKoto consists of Sizakele Gabuza (Siza), Tamara Ringas and Kate de Gruchy, three dynamic musicians each bringing their rich backgrounds and artistic flair to the ensemble. Together, they craft sounds that are both innovative and introspective, resonating deeply with diverse audiences.
Sizakele Gabuza, known artistically as SIZA, brings a vibrant Afro-jazz influence to the group. A native of the bustling streets of Soweto, her impressive career includes collaborations with numerous South African music legends. Her powerful voice and diverse musical repertoire contribute a rich, soulful dimension to SojoKoto’s sound.
Tamara Ringas is a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and audio-visual composer with a background in music technology. Known for their solo projects under the moniker Tamrias, Tamara's compositions are showcased globally, from the Queer Arts Festival in Melbourne to the Athens Digital Arts Festival.
Kate de Gruchy, originally from Pietermaritzburg, is a multi-disciplinary artist who merges her classical composition training with a profound interest in the intersections of sound, poetry, and spirituality. A singer-songwriter with a penchant for guitar and piano, Kate’s music is heavily influenced by folk, rock, blues, and classical elements, enriched by her philosophical lyrics and the idea of music as a vehicle for social change.
SojoKoto has graced stages like the Sawubona Music Jam in Soweto, captivating audiences with their compelling performances. The trio is currently working on an EP, with anticipation building through upcoming radio interviews and performances on stations such as Kaya FM and Radio 2000.
