Shwi Nomtsekhala
Bio
Shwi no Mtekhala was a South African Maskandi duo made up of Mandla Xaba, known as Shwi, and Zwelenduna Rodgers Magubane, known as Mtekhala. The two musicians were born in Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal and later moved to Johannesburg in search of opportunities in the music industry.
They began their musical journey writing songs for the Isicathamiya group Hlanganani before releasing their own material. Their debut album Dustbin was released in 2003. Their major breakthrough came in 2005 with the album Wangisiza Baba, which sold more than 500 000 copies and firmly established them as one of the leading acts in Maskandi. Their music resonated widely because it combined traditional Zulu guitar styles with themes about family, hardship, spirituality and community values.
Over the years they released several successful albums, including Angimazi Ubaba, Kukhulu Emgakubona, Indod’ Endlini, Emkhathini, Seludlulile and Wang’khulisa uMama. Their sound played an important role in bringing Maskandi into mainstream South African music spaces.
In 2020 they experimented with a fresh direction through a collaboration that blended Maskandi with Afropop influences. This showed their willingness to adapt creatively while maintaining their cultural identity. After more than two decades together, the duo disbanded in 2022. Shwi later rebranded himself as Shwi Mantombazane and continued performing as a solo artist.
Shwi no Mtekhala is remembered as one of the most influential Maskandi duos of their era. Their songs reflected rural Zulu life with honesty and emotional depth, and their success helped expand the reach of Maskandi music across the country.
