Samsong
Bio
Samsong, born Samson Uche Mogekwu on 30 November 1974 in Delta State, Nigeria, is one of Nigeria’s most enduring and respected gospel music voices. Based in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, Samsong has spent over three decades shaping contemporary gospel music through powerful vocals, spiritually grounded songwriting, and consistent ministry.
His journey into music began during his high school years, where his singing talent first gained attention and the name Samsong was adopted — a name that would later become synonymous with excellence in Nigerian gospel music. Alongside his musical growth, he pursued formal education, earning a degree in Accounting from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, in Edo State. This balance between artistry and discipline would later reflect in the longevity of his career.
In the early 1990s, Samsong co-founded a gospel quartet known as Praise Creation. The group was signed to Ivory Music Label and released their debut album, Best of Life, in 1996. Although the group eventually disbanded, this period laid the foundation for Samsong’s emergence as a solo artist.
His solo breakthrough came in 2002 with the release of Count Your Blessings, an album that earned him The Psalmist Award and firmly positioned him within Nigeria’s gospel mainstream. This success was followed by Still Counting (2004), which won him Best Male Vocalist of the Year at both the Today’s Music Awards and The Amen Awards, as well as Best Video of the Year at the Vigoma Awards.
In 2007, Samsong released The World of My Dreams, a project that demonstrated his versatility and collaborative spirit. The album featured a celebrated remake of “One Love” with legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu, as well as a duet with Styl-Plus titled “Live Right.” That same year, he received the Grace Honorary Award for Excellence and earned a nomination for Best Gospel Artist at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in New York.
Beyond Nigeria, Samsong’s ministry has reached international audiences through tours in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Seychelles, where he was officially received by the country’s Vice President. He has shared stages with global gospel icons such as Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Winans, and Panam Percy Paul.
Widely known for hit songs like “Bianule” and “Odogwu” (featuring Chioma), Samsong remains one of the most consistent figures in Nigerian gospel music. With decades of impact, collaborations with leading gospel artists, and a career built on faith and excellence, Samsong continues to inspire worshippers across generations.
