Refilwe Nkomo

Bio

Refilwe Nkomo is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist, curator, educator and producer who works in the intersection of arts and social justice to create cultural and artistic interventions, programmes and installations.

In addition to winning numerous awards, she has presented her research and performances in South Africa, South Korea, Ghana, Botswana, Brazil, Germany, and the United States of America. Her work has included founding and co-founding numerous organizations and platforms, including We Are Here, a non-profit organization working to end gender-based violence.

She is a Clore Chevening Fellow for 2019/2020, a Curatorial Fellow for ICA 2021/22, and one of the M&G 200 Young South Africans for 2020.

Her previous position was Director of VANSA (Visual Arts Network of South Africa). Her interests include memory, archives, feminism, black performance theory, trauma, affect, and social change.
