Bio

Ras Chikomeni David Chirwa is a Malawian politician, musician, and Rastafarian activist known for his unconventional and revolutionary approach to politics. He gained significant public attention during the 2019 Malawian general election and has remained a vocal figure in Malawian social and political discourse. 

Political Career & 2019 Candidacy:

  • Chikomeni rose to fame as an aspiring presidential candidate for the 2019 elections. His campaign was marked by several unique and controversial elements:
  • Running Mate: He initially attempted to name his mother as his running mate, a move that sparked widespread debate.
  • Key Promises: His platform included the legalisation of marijuana (Indian Hemp) and the establishment of a "Ganja University".
  • Language & Identity: He famously chose to speak in Chichewa during formal proceedings as a rejection of colonial influence and to identify with the common person.
  • Disqualification: He was ultimately disqualified from the 2019 race by the Malawi Electoral Commission for failing to raise the required nomination fee of K2 million and lacking enough registered voters to support his nomination.

  • 2025 Presidential Race: Chikomeni initially expressed interest in running as an independent candidate for the 2025 Malawian elections. However, reports in mid-2025 indicated that he withdrew from the race.
  • Cannabis Regulatory Authority: In December 2025, it was reported that he was appointed as a board member of the Cannabis Regulatory Authority.
  • Public Activism: He continues to use social media, particularly his Facebook page, to offer commentary on Malawian governance, criticize tribalism, and advocate for the poor.

Early Career: Born on 1 October 1977, he was a backing vocalist for the legendary Malawian reggae artist Evison Matafale in late 2001.

Revolutionary Stance: He often refers to his ideology as "Word, Sound, and Power," positioning himself as a revolutionary figure representing marginalized communities.
