Ramiro Mendes

Ramiro Mendes (born 1961) is a distinguished Cape Verdean musician, producer, and author, widely recognised for co-founding The Mendes Brothers alongside his brother, João Mendes. Regarded as a musical visionary, he has played a pivotal role in bringing Cape Verdean and Angolan music to international audiences.

After emigrating to the United States in 1978, Mendes and his brother formed The Mendes Brothers, a group dedicated to performing traditional sounds from their homeland, including morna and coladeira, while seamlessly incorporating global musical influences. This fusion helped broaden the reach and appeal of Lusophone African music.

Beyond his work as a performer, Mendes has established himself as a prolific and influential producer. He is notably credited with shaping the sound and success of legendary singer Cesária Évora, earning a reputation as a “musical architect” behind her international acclaim.

He also co-founded the MB record label, which has supported and promoted numerous Lusophone artists, including Waldemar Bastos and Mirri Lobo, further contributing to the global recognition of African music.

Mendes’ own body of work includes compositions such as “Angola” and albums like Bandera, Palonkon, and Torri Di Control, all of which reflect his expansive musical vision and cultural depth.

Academically, he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he obtained qualifications in film scoring and commercial arranging. In addition to his musical achievements, Mendes is actively involved in humanitarian efforts, advocating for peace and national reconciliation across Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP).

In recognition of his cultural contributions, he has been awarded the Medalha do Vulcão and the Medalha de Mérito by the government of Cape Verde. He is also the author of Sound, a book exploring his philosophical and metaphysical perspectives on music and consciousness.
