Prophet's Concubine

Prophet’s Concubine – a visionary Soweto-born musician who is known for her haunting melodies and powerful lyrics, defies genre boundaries by fusing African folk, rock and jazz to create a truly powerful sound. A multitalented artist, she is a singer, songwriter, poet, actress, creative writer and aspiring flutist. With a name that evokes both the sacred and the rebellious, Prophet's Concubine's music explores themes of spirituality, societal boundaries and ills, resonating deeply with audiences searching for meaning beyond the surface.

Building on her formal training in jazz, courtesy of her National Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music, Prophet’s Concubine has evolved her unique sound by incorporating elements of rock, folk, electronic, traditional and tribal music. This innovative blend is showcased in her project, “The Learning to be Free Sound” (which is a collection of various works including “CAN THESE BONES LIVE?”). It is a testament to her artistic fearlessness and dedication to creative exploration.

She has written for and performed in theatre productions, participated in music festivals (National Arts Festival, Joy of Jazz, Arts Alive, etc.), weddings, restaurants and private functions, studio sessions and backing vocals for a number of acts (Ringo Madlingozi, most notably). In 2022, she featured in Linda Tshabalala’s album “Convergence Bekezela Siyeza” which won an award at the Mzansi Jazz Awards for the “Best Newcomer” category.

Her influences include Thandiswa Mazwai, Jill Scott, Busi Mhlongo, Fatoumata Diawara, Simphiwe Dana, Erykah Badu, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Holiday, Cassandra Wilson, Eartha Kitt, Grace Jones and Letta Mbulu.
