Platform One

Bio

Platform One is a legendary South African musical ensemble whose name has become synonymous with the spirit of celebration. Originally formed in 1992 in the vibrant township of Pimville, Soweto, the group began as a collective of teenagers united by a shared passion for dance. This youthful energy soon evolved into a sophisticated musical force that would go on to define a genre.

The group’s founding members—lead vocalist Nani Tengo, alongside Sonto Dladla and Neli Gwala—laid the groundwork for what would become a cultural phenomenon. Over the decades, Platform One has seen a natural evolution in its line-up, with the most recent iteration featuring the formidable talents of Zamani Khumalo (lead vocalist and songwriter), Sipho Mthembu (vocalist and musical director), Sibusiso Dlamini (keyboardist), and Mthokozisi Khumalo (vocalist and choreographer).

Platform One famously carved out a unique niche in the industry, becoming the definitive architects of the modern "wedding song." Their music, characterised by infectious rhythms and celebratory themes, is an essential staple at matrimonial ceremonies and community festivities across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Their ability to blend traditional sensibilities with a contemporary pop appeal has ensured their longevity, making their discography a timeless soundtrack for life's most joyous milestones.

With a legacy spanning over three decades, Platform One remains a cherished institution, continuing to unite generations through the power of song and the enduring rhythm of the African wedding.
