Phuzekhemisi

Bio

Phuzekhemisi was born Zibokwakhe Johnstone Mnyandu in 1963 in Umkomaas on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. His stage name translates roughly as “drink the medicine.” He is widely regarded as one of the most important voices in traditional Zulu maskandi music.

He began his career alongside his brother under the name Phuzekhemisi no Khethani. Their album Imbizo released in the early 1990s brought them national recognition. The duo’s songs addressed social issues and challenged traditional authority in rural communities, often touching on themes such as unfair taxation and social injustice.

After the death of his brother Khethani, Phuzekhemisi continued solo. Over the ensuing decades he released more than 20 albums and became a leading maskandi artist. His music is known for skilful guitar work, traditional Zulu rhythms and lyrics that speak directly to the conditions and struggles experienced by Zulu and rural South African communities.

Phuzekhemisi’s work has often been politically conscious. His songs criticise corruption, inequality and the burdens faced by ordinary South Africans. His willingness to tackle sensitive issues made him controversial in some quarters, but also gave his music a powerful social resonance. He has maintained the original maskandi style even as the industry and audience evolved.

He remains active more than fifty years after he began. Despite an injury to his leg during a recent live performance he affirmed his intention to return strongly to the stage. He continues to record music, mentor younger artists and defend the dignity of maskandi music. His enduring presence makes him a living legend and a bridge between generations for South Africa’s traditional musical heritage.
