Phoebe Mgxaji
Bio
Growing up in an environment that does not see music as a career choice Phoebe Mgxaji has learnt that passion is not only a passion she chose but that in many ways, chose her.
With music that is influenced by many contemporary South African Jazz and Gospel musicians both old and new, she has learnt that expression has no boundaries and she does not intend to create any.
Performing regularly at jazz venues such as The Forge, Untitled Basement, Nikki's Oasis, Chiesa di PAZZO LUPi and Baze Lounge corporate spaces such as Emperors Palace, The Linder Auditorium, Cape Town Festival, Suid Oosterfees 2025 and she has been part of the National Youth Jazz Band and performing for RMB Starlight Classics 2025. Phoebe Mgxaji has built a respected name among musicians and audiences.
Being an Honors student at the University of Witwatersrand, she has also been the recipient of a sponsorship that allowed her the opportunity to go to the University of Michigan in Kalamazoo to attend a vocal boot camp hosted by the very well acclaimed musicians, New York Voices. Amongst many other academic awards for being an excellent student, Phoebe Mgxaji has also been awarded the 2025 Beste Prestasie Opkomende Kunstenaar award at the Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees. She has travelled with an ensemble to India as a representative of South Africa in their World Cultural Festival.
Phoebe Mgxaji has been a part of many mentorship programs that aim to involve the arts in the development of young minds as also in empowering young women to use their voices even I spaces that don't allow them to. It has been a pleasure of hers to find herself working with peers who believe that success comes in building each other up is one of my objectives as a creative and she continues to seek out and participate in those spaces.
"Being a musicians I’ve learnt that speaking can only do so much. So whatever I cannot speak, I sing" - Phoebe Mgxaji
