Philharmonie de Paris

Bio

Separated into five distinct areas (the Arab world, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Amerindian cultures), the collection of instruments at Philharmonie is enhanced with audio-visual extracts which allows visitors to appreciate the cultural specificities of certain traditions in their context, or to simply discover extremely rare instruments.

With a national collection of more than 7000 pieces, the Museum combines instrument conservation, scientific research, interaction with musicians, and engagement with the public.

Currently, the museum’s conservation and research team combines human and physical sciences to enhance knowledge, conservation and restoration of the musical instruments. Its’ research activity forms a part of the field of study of material and cultural history of a particular object. The research themes follow the study of the materials, structures and musical operations of the instruments as well as their evolutions so as to place the objects in their historical, social and artistic context.
These studies enable the museum to present the instrument through several skill-fields and find their direct application so to maintain it in a playable state.

Philharmonie de Paris is open to members of the public from Tuesday to Friday at 12h00pm until 18h00pm. On Saturday and Sunday the museum is open from 10h00am until 18h00pm.
