Paul Ngozi

Paul Ngozi was a pioneering Zambian rock musician, songwriter, and bandleader, widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of Zamrock. Born in 1949 in Zambia, he became a central figure in shaping the country’s rock music scene by blending traditional African rhythms with psychedelic rock, blues, and funk influences.

Paul Ngozi started his music career in the early 1970s, rising to prominence after forming the band Ngozi Family. The group released its first recordings in 1972, marking the beginning of a prolific era that would see Ngozi produce numerous albums throughout the decade. His music was known for its raw sound, socially conscious lyrics, and experimental guitar work, which set him apart from his contemporaries.

As the leader of Ngozi Family, Paul Ngozi played a key role in mentoring young musicians and expanding the reach of Zamrock both locally and internationally. His work reflected everyday African life, spirituality, love, and social struggles, making his music deeply relatable to many listeners.
