Bio

Odwa Bongo is a singer, songwriter, composer and performer from South Africa.

Bongo's music is experimental with a dominating African rooted sound. It is an experiment of soul feeding sounds best described as avant-garde.

He was classically trained at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School under the guidance of Doctor Johann Van Der Sandt who is a phenomenal and globally well-known choirmaster. He also received training from Rykie Boeke who was the second conductor of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir.

In 2010, Bongo was awarded the Best Tenor Soloist award and was chosen to represent South Africa in South Korea as a member of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.

After his best years at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, he was introduced to Jazz in 2012 and in the same year he was chosen to be the School's Big Band vocalist at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown.

He then matriculated at the prestigious Bridge House School in 2013. In 2014, he attended The Rainbow Academy where he flourished in his music. Bongo was awarded the Best Student of the Year Award in music and was the top student in his class.

In 2018 he obtained an advanced performance diploma in African Music at the University of Cape Town. Bongo has worked with Xhopra Queen, Mthwakazi Mthwakazi, Morena Leraba, James Bassingthwaighte, Dumama & Kechou, Blackroots Marimbas, Azanian Aesthetics, Cape Cultural Collective, Nesipho and Digital Sangoma. He has shared the stage with Zolani Mahola (Freshlyground singer) in a few occasions.

Impiliso (one of his well-known projects) has been received by a number of institutions, live music venues and intimate private functions around the country. It was part of the 2018 Band Stand in Artscape and the 2018 University of Johannesburg's Youth Arts Festival.
