Oby Onyioha, born in 1959 in Lagos, Nigeria, is a pioneering singer and songwriter credited with shaping the Nigerian disco music scene. Her work blends Western pop influences with traditional Nigerian elements, establishing her as a trailblazer in a music industry that was largely male-dominated during her early career.
Academic Background
Before pursuing music professionally, Onyioha distinguished herself as a high-achieving academic. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, later advancing her studies with a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Social Anthropology from SOAS University of London.
Musical Career
Oby Onyioha launched her music career with the 1981 release of her debut album, I Want to Feel Your Love, which became influential in the Nigerian pop and boogie culture of the 1980s. Her music gained acclaim for its innovative fusion of disco rhythms with local sounds, earning her a lasting place in Nigeria’s music history.
After a two-decade hiatus beginning in the early 1990s to focus on other pursuits, Onyioha returned to the music scene in 2015 with her third studio album, Heritage.
