Nozinja

Bio

Richard Mthetwa, known to the world as Nozinja, was born in Giyani, Limpopo Province, a region steeped in the rich musical traditions of the Tsonga/Shangaan people. From an early age, Mthetwa was surrounded by the rhythms, chants, and dances that defined his community’s cultural identity. These early experiences would plant the seeds for a musical revolution that decades later would earn him international acclaim.

As a young man, Mthetwa moved to Soweto, a sprawling township near Johannesburg, in search of opportunity. Initially, his entrepreneurial instincts led him to run mobile phone repair shops, but the pulsing energy of township life, street parties, dance competitions, and informal music gatherings, called him in a different direction. Fascinated by the hyper-fast dances of the Shangaan people, he began experimenting with electronic music production, blending the traditional rhythms of his homeland with the synthetic beats and tempos of modern dance music. This fusion would become the foundation of Shangaan electro, a genre that would later captivate audiences far beyond South Africa’s borders.

Nozinja’s early work was as much about culture as it was about music. He recorded local dancers and singers, directed music videos with limited resources, and meticulously crafted tracks that could keep pace with the lightning-fast footwork of Shangaan dancers. His efforts were rooted in a deep respect for his heritage, yet carried an irrepressible spirit of innovation. By the late 2000s, these local experiments began to attract attention, culminating in the 2010 London release of Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music from South Africa by Honest Jon’s Records. The compilation introduced global audiences to the frenetic energy of Shangaan electro and positioned Nozinja as a pioneer in electronic music.

In 2015, Nozinja released Nozinja Lodge on Warp Records, a bold album that showcased his signature sound, high-speed electronic beats, playful synth melodies, and the relentless rhythms of traditional Tsonga music. Tracks like “Tsekeleke” became emblematic of his style: complex, joyful, and impossible not to dance to. But beyond his solo work, Nozinja has been instrumental in nurturing talent through his label Nozinja Music, mentoring a new generation of artists who continue to innovate within the genre.

Today, Nozinja stands as both a cultural custodian and a global innovator. His music preserves the essence of Shangaan culture while reimagining it for a worldwide stage. Through his electrifying beats and commitment to community, he has transformed a regional sound into a global phenomenon, inspiring dancers, DJs, and producers across continents. In Nozinja, the world finds not only a musician but a visionary who proves that tradition and technology can dance together, creating rhythms that transcend borders.
