Bio
Nobuntu is celebrating fifteen years since first captivating audiences with their heavenly harmonies. The acclaimed ensemble is preparing for an exciting year of music, dance, and international travel, continuing to mesmerize audiences around the world while using the power of music as a healing and uniting force.
Formed in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Nobuntu is an all-female quintet internationally recognized for its unique fusion of traditional Zimbabwean-rooted music, Afro-Jazz, and Gospel. Known for their rich Afrocentric sound and breathtaking vocal harmonies, the group has established itself as a powerful presence both at home in Zimbabwe and on global stages. With three albums in their catalogue— Thina (2013), Ekhaya (2016), and Obabes Bembube (2019)—Nobuntu continues to captivate audiences through electrifying performances and interactive workshops across continents.
At the heart of Nobuntu’s work is a mission to celebrate and preserve African culture and heritage through artistic expression. The group describes itself as a “wheel of change,” using music to transcend racial, tribal, and gender boundaries while promoting unity and cultural pride. Their performances are defined by powerful “pure voice” harmonies supported by minimal percussion and traditional instruments such as the Mbira, creating a deeply authentic and emotive sound.
Nobuntu’s impact has earned them significant recognition, including nominations at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards for Best Musician of the Year and two wins for Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards. Beyond the stage, the group is also committed to social responsibility through the Nobuntu Padbanks Initiative, which provides sanitary wear to girls and women in underserved communities by establishing pad banks at arts and youth centres in Bulawayo.
The name “Nobuntu” reflects the African philosophy of humbleness, love, unity, and family, expressed through a woman’s perspective—values that continue to guide the group’s music, message, and global journey.
