Nkosazana Nolwazi Kimberly Nzama (born 6 October 2000), known professionally as Nkosazana Daughter, is a South African singer and songwriter recognised for her distinctive vocal tone and contribution to the amapiano genre. Her music blends soulful expression with deep house and Afro-pop influences, earning her widespread acclaim across Africa and beyond.
Early life and career beginnings
Born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Nzama began singing at an early age and developed her craft through local performances and online collaborations. She gained early recognition through singles such as ‘Izitha’, ‘Umama Akekho’ and ‘Sbindi Uyabulala’, which introduced her expressive style to a national audience. Her career progressed when she worked with DJ Prince Kaybee and Goldmax of Distruction Boyz, later connecting with DJ Maphorisa and the late Mpura, whose mentorship and collaborations helped her enter South Africa’s mainstream music scene.
Rise to prominence
Nzama’s breakthrough came in 2022 with the release of ‘Sofa Silahlane’, a collaboration with Master KG and Lowsheen. The single topped Apple’s Local iTunes Chart and received extensive airplay across South African radio. The accompanying video for “Dali Nguwe”, another collaboration with Master KG, surpassed three million views within three weeks of release. Her growing portfolio of collaborations includes DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, Tyler ICU, Major League DJz, Makhadzi and Heavy K, solidifying her position as a leading voice in Amapiano.
She has performed in several African countries including Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, as well as in the United States, expanding her reputation as an international performer.
Major releases
In June 2023, Nzama released her debut studio album Uthingo Le Nkosazana, featuring 14 tracks and collaborations with prominent artists such as Master KG, DJ Maphorisa and Young Jonn. The album debuted at number three in South Africa and reached number 34 on Spotify’s Top Albums chart.
In July 2024, she and Master KG released the joint album Makhelwane, led by the single of the same name. The album achieved gold certification in South Africa within its first day, surpassing 100 million streams and marking a significant milestone in her career.
Artistry and ventures
Known for her soulful delivery and emotional depth, Nzama’s music explores themes of love, spirituality and resilience. Her artistry has also extended into fashion through a collaboration withLuxe Homme, a South African luxury brand, where she launched a collection branded with her initials, ND (Nkosazana Daughter).
In June 2023, Apple Music named her an Africa Rising artist, highlighting her as one of the continent’s most promising talents.
