Nathi Mathunjwa

Bio

Nathi Mathunjwa, born Nkosinathi E. Mathunjwa, is a highly skilled South African musician, pianist, singer, composer, and producer from Kwa Thema, Springs, east of Johannesburg. Rooted in community and shaped by early exposure to music, his artistic journey reflects discipline, collaboration, and a deep respect for musical tradition.

From a young age, Nathi showed a strong connection to music, joining his primary school choir and developing his abilities within school and community spaces. His commitment to growth led him to Central Johannesburg College (formerly Eastside College), where he majored in Jazz and Popular Music. There, he refined his technical skill, musical theory, and performance practice, while also building relationships within South Africa’s evolving jazz and creative industries.

He began his professional career as a freelance musician in 2005, steadily establishing himself as a reliable and versatile collaborator. Over the years, Nathi has worked across live performance, studio recording, composition, and production, contributing meaningfully to both independent and institutional music projects.

Among his notable collaborative works is his contribution to Spontaneous Combustion, produced through the It Has To Be Jazz Series, where he worked with fellow songwriters and musicians to explore contemporary jazz expression. His musical depth and sensitivity also led to collaborations with acclaimed jazz artist Malcolm Jiyane, contributing to the albums Umdali and True Story. These projects reflect his ability to engage with layered musical narratives while remaining grounded in emotional and cultural context.

Nathi’s performance career has taken him to respected local and international stages, including Oppikoppie Festival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Jazz on the Lake Festival, Moshito Music Conference, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Roskilde Festival. Through these platforms, he has shared South African musical perspectives with diverse audiences while strengthening cultural exchange.

Earlier in his career, he performed under the name Dukwane, a period remembered fondly by long-time supporters and peers. Today, his work under the name Nathi Mathunjwa represents artistic maturity, clarity of purpose, and continued dedication to creative excellence.

At the heart of Nathi’s practice is a commitment to community, mentorship, and artistic integrity. His journey reflects the impact of early arts education, sustained collaboration, and cultural responsibility. He remains an important voice within South Africa’s contemporary jazz and popular music landscape, bridging generations and creative disciplines through sound.
