Mzungu Kichaa

Bio

"... We say, just keep doing what you're doing, crazy white man." (Guardian Network Africa). Mzungu Kichaa launched his debut in 2009 and quickly achieved massive success in his main market Tanzania, as well as success in various international markets.

His first big musical influences were Bob Marley and guitar lengend Jimi Hendrix and later the poetic timbre of Tracy Chapmans voice. Growing up on the continent he soon found a deep connection to the pan-african sound of Congolese rumba and soukous. With all these diverse influences no wonder Mzungu Kichaa has found an eclectic sound of his own.

One of the most important fundamentals, that is so vivid in his music, is the message of unity which became a powerful part of Tanzania’s social fabric since its independence in 1961. The idea that an artist is a mirror of society is still very important when it comes to Mzungu Kichaa’s songwriting, regardless of whether he writes in english or swahili.

His artist name which means “crazy white man” was coined by fellow Tanzanian artist Juma Nature after they met at Bongo Records in the late 90s. It was first years later that Mzungu Kichaa finally accepted his new name and started to own it. During his time at Bongo Records he played an instrumental role in influencing the sound of Bongo Flava through his deep knowledge of local traditional music and his skills as a guitarist and composer.

With a vocal and guitar feature on Solo Thang’s Mambo ya Pwani (Remix), Kichaa was heard all over East Africa on one of Bongo Flava’s biggest songs in 1999. He is also recognised for his vocals on Juma Nature’s Hili Game and his signature guitar licks on Mangwaire’s She Gatta Gwan. However, his involvement in these songs was not public knowledge until he officially launched as Mzungu Kichaa in 2009 and started to gain media attention after releasing his first single Jitolee featuring Professor Jay & Mwasiti.

After finishing high school in Tanzania, in the year 2000, he moved to London to study Ethnomusicology. There he met with Remmy Ongala’s lead guitarist Kawele Mutimanwa and started playing on the Congolese music scene in East London as a rhythm guitarist. In 2005 he moved back to Denmark and joined the rising reggae scene, and founded the group Effigong as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. Although Mzungu Kichaa now tours extensively internationally, and is based in Denmark for much of the year, he still resides in Tanzania. He tours with a 6 piece Tanzanian band including drums, percussion, bass, guitar and keyboards.

The debut album Tuko Pamoja (2009), an album 100% in swahili, had a massive impact in Tanzania and Kenya, but also saw significant following in Europe and the US, especially among the African diaspora. The release saw him win Best Upcoming Artist at the African Achievement Awards, and a nomination at the Danish Music Awards. This was shortly followed by an invitation to join the team of judges for the Tanzanian...
