Mpura: Amapiano Lyricist Who Bridged Street Fashion and Sound

Mongezi Thomas Stuurman (22 September 1995 – 9 August 2021), professionally known as Mpura, was a South African rapper, record producer and fashion designer whose sharp lyricism helped define the sound and attitude of amapiano at its commercial peak. He rose to national prominence with the chart-topping hit “Umsebenzi Wethu”, a Zulu-language anthem that became one of the genre’s most recognisable records. He was also known for popular songs such as “Impilo Yase Sandton”.

Early life and education
Mpura was born and raised in Chiawelo Extension 3, Soweto, Gauteng. He attended Highlands North Boys’ High School, where his creative interests began to take shape, later evolving into a multi-disciplinary career that blended music, fashion and street culture.

Career
Before his rise in the music industry, Mpura was active in fashion and founded Mpura Designs, a unisex streetwear brand rooted in township aesthetics and contemporary urban culture. In 2018, he made his South African Fashion Week debut, where he showcased his Autumn/Winter 2019 collection.

His music career reached a major milestone on 11 December 2020 with the release of “Umsebenzi Wethu”, a collaborative single alongside Busta 929, featuring Lady Du, Reece Madlisa, Mr JazziQ and Zuma. The song topped the local iTunes charts and achieved platinum certification, firmly establishing Mpura as one of amapiano’s most distinctive lyrical voices. Known for his bold delivery and socially grounded storytelling, he played a key role in shaping the genre’s mainstream crossover, blending street narratives with dance-floor appeal.

Awards and recognition
Mpura’s contribution to amapiano was formally recognised in 2021 when he won the Best Amapiano Lyricist/Rapper award at the SA Amapiano Music Awards.

Death
Mpura died on 9 August 2021 in a car accident while travelling to a performance in the North West province. He passed away alongside fellow artists Thando and Killer Kau, a loss that deeply affected South Africa’s music community.
