Michael Nkuna

Michael Nkuna is a dynamic and versatile trumpeter, composer, and recording artist whose passion for music
transcends genres. Hailing from Johannesburg, Nkuna
’
s musical journey began in the vibrant echoes of his
local church in Tembisa, where he first discovered the rhythm of the drums. As he grew older, his love for
music led him to the trumpet—a decision that set him on a path of artistic excellence from which he has never
looked back.
A dedicated student of his craft, Nkuna honed his skills at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he
studied music under the mentorship of the esteemed Ndabenhle Zulu. His rise in the South African music
scene has been nothing short of extraordinary. In 2017, he became one of the youngest musicians to perform
at Khaya Mahlangu
’
s South African Jazz Health and Alliance project, a milestone that marked the beginning
of his illustrious career.
Nkuna
'
s talent was further recognized in 2019 when he joined the Unisa Wind Ensemble Orchestra and
triumphed in the Unisa Competition for Classical Trumpet. His musical journey then led him to the
prestigious Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in 2021, under the guidance of Dr. Nduduzo
Makhatini, where his artistry flourished.
With his meticulous and expressive playing, Nkuna has become a sought-after collaborator,
performing with musical giants such as Linda Sikhakhane, Billy Monama, Banda Banda, and
legendary figures like McCoy Mrubata, Afrika Mkhize, Sibongile Mngoma, and Steve Dyer.
He has graced stages with renowned bands like Phupho L'ka Biko, Salvation Army, Little
Falls Christian Church Band, and Lyndi Lee
’
s Band. His musical range goes beyond jazz,
with Nkuna also performing with Zakes Bantwini’
s Big Band, Emmkay, DJ Maphorisa, and
recently contributing on David Mokone
’
s upcoming project, Bawo.
Driven by his deep love for diverse musical styles, Nkuna founded his own band, AfroWest,
blending Southern and Western African influences to create a unique and enchanting
sound. As he works on his debut solo project, slated for release in 2025, Nkuna is set to
showcase his talents not only as a performer but also as a composer, inviting audiences
to experience the full breadth of his musical vision
