Matt Travers
Bio
BIOGRAPHY:
Matthew Nyanzi David, professionally known as Matt Travers, is a Ugandan artist-producer that has established a distinct presence within East Africa's alternative music landscape by seamlessly balancing his dual identity. His work is characterized by a unique energy that resonates deeply with a contemporary, multi-hyphenate generation looking for honest expression rooted in authentic African culture.
The Brand Story: From the Sidelines to the Studio
The creative drive behind the Matt Travers brand is rooted in a defining childhood memory. As a ten-year-old student, Matthew was left behind as his teammates went on to participate in a cross-border football tournament. He had the talent and the heart, but the financial capability was completely outside his control.
That disappointment sparked a quiet, disciplined fire. He vowed never to let his progress depend on someone else's ledger or a stroke of luck. Over the next decade, that emotion was funneled into a relentless pursuit of creative autonomy. From saving for his first PlayStation to eventually building his own private recording studio, Travers focused on ensuring that the "gates" stayed open. This journey shapes his role today. He didn't master the artist-producer ecosystem to work in an isolated silo; he built his infrastructure to become a trusted peer who can finally say "yes" to the vision, the music, and the independent talents whom the mainstream industry routinely leaves behind. He stands not above his community, but squarely within it, acting as an intentional architect of his own culture.
Discography and Major Projects
MOZO EP (2025) — Art as Service
In April 2025, Travers released his definitive solo debut project, MOZO. The title traces back to his first nickname in high school, but it carries a profound conceptual weight, translating to "servant" in various regional contexts. For Travers, the five-track EP was framed as an intentional act of creative service to his people—a vulnerable offering to the collective emotional landscape of Kampala's shifting creative class.
Sonically, MOZO perfectly encapsulates his artist-producer signature: an effortlessly smooth, laid-back vocal delivery juxtaposed against dense, hard-hitting basslines. The project features standout records like "slow dance," "goodlyf," and "vita," and highlights his cross-border vision with collaborative features from Uganda’s Kevin Mawejje and Rwanda's thedicekid.
To visually anchor the project's message of liberation, the MOZO era was defined by a striking conceptual aesthetic. Travers consistently appeared in a vibrant orange prison jumpsuit—a powerful visual metaphor representing the feeling of being trapped by societal expectations, while using raw, honest music as the ultimate vehicle for freedom and self-determination.
Furthering his commitment to community infrastructure, Travers recently contributed executive production and an artist feature to The Village Meeting Volume 1. Conceived as a joint effort among a vanguard of independent Ugandan urban creatives, the compilation project acts as a collaborative proof-of-concept aimed at setting elevated professional standards and providing a unified platform for alternative artistic narratives in the region.
