Matshwa Bemuda
Bio
Born Freddy Masingi in 1973 in Nkovane village, he would come to be known by the stage-name Matshwa Bemuda, one of the most prolific and influential voices in Tsonga traditional music.
Matshwa officially began his professional music career in 1997, releasing his debut album Chom na Chom No. 1. Over the next decade, he released an astonishing 24 albums, under a variety of artistic names, demonstrating both creative range and an extraordinary work ethic. His discography includes 10 albums under “Matshwa Bemuda Chom na Chom”, 5 under “Gezani Thomas Mzamani”, 4 under “MhakaMhakeni”, 4 under “Vhimbha Mkhwana”, and 1 under “Mzamani wa Jack”.
What set Matshwa apart was his lyrical brilliance, he used the Tsonga language, proverbs, and cultural storytelling to reflect the lived experiences, values, and challenges of the Tsonga people. His songs didn’t just entertain; they educated, preserved tradition, and resonated deeply within his community.
More than just a recording artist, Matshwa played a significant role as a mentor and inspiration for younger musicians. Artists such as Dr. Sunglen Chabalala, Mayanda and Percy Mfana have publicly acknowledged his influence on their musical paths.
Although Matshwa Bemuda passed away in 2006, his legacy lives on, in the albums he left behind, in the artists he mentored, and in the cultural memory of the Tsonga community. His voice continues to inspire, educate, and preserve a heritage that remains vital today
