Mathias Mhere

Bio

Mathias Mhere is a Zimbabwean musician whose passion for music began at a very young age. He was born on 13 of June 1988 in Gutu, Masvingo grew in Gweru. Mhere attended Saint Mary’s Primary and Matinunura High schools. His interest in music started when he was young and the passion prompted him to play worn-out pots. He also sang in church but shortly afterwards he and his siblings established a choral group called the Gospel Hurricane. The band dispersed and he joined another group called Created to Worship: the group disbanded due to financial challenges and he joined a Gweru group called Rock of Ages. The group released an album titled ‘Hakuna Unoramba’.

He relocated to Harare and this made him establish a solo career. This drove him to raise money to record his debut album ‘tinoda Nyasha’ which was poorly marketed. He took a four year sabbatical and came back in 2011 with the release of another album 'Anoita Minana'. It featured popular song ‘Favour’ and this saw him rising to prominence in 2012. Some of the songs on the album include ‘Vimba NaJehova’, ‘Areka’, ‘Chipostora’ and ‘Glory To Glory’. The album was accompanied by a DVD.

His music has drawn controversy as he was reportedly accused of copying Blessing Shumba. Mhere dismissed the claims but attributed their striking sound to the fact that they share the same producer. He has to date released three albums namely ‘Tinoda Nyasha’, ‘Anoita Minana’ and ‘Nguva yeNyasha’. In May 2013, he was appointed charity homes ambassador by the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (ZAHA).
