Ma Kap Kap

Bio

MaKap Kap was a celebrated South African kwaito collective assembled under the banner of Mdu Productions, the influential record label founded by legendary kwaito pioneer Mdu Masilela. Bringing together a dynamic lineup that included Mawillies, Mdu himself and members of the iconic group Mashamplani, MaKap Kap embodied the vibrant energy, street culture and infectious dance rhythms that defined the golden era of kwaito music in the late 1990s. The collective first made its mark in 1997 with the release of Mawe – Rainbow Squad, an album that captured the excitement and optimism of a nation finding its identity through music and sport. The following year, the artists reunited as Ma Kap Kap 2 to release My Ding, further cementing their place within South Africa's rapidly growing urban music movement. Their most enduring contribution remains the anthem "Mawe," a song that became closely associated with the national football team, Bafana Bafana, during their historic 1998 FIFA World Cup campaign in France. The track evolved into a powerful symbol of national pride, uniting football supporters and music fans alike while capturing the spirit of a defining moment in South African history. Today, MaKap Kap's music remains a nostalgic reminder of an era when kwaito soundtracked the country's cultural awakening, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with lovers of South African music and sport.
