Luyolo Lenga

Bio

Luyolo is a music director and leader of an ensemble, and has a deep passion for indigenous African, traditional, choral and church music. He’s the composer, author and arranger of a fusion style of music that pays homage to the isiXhosa language, accessing ancestral sounds from ancient stringed bow and percussion instruments, utilising classical techniques and shifts back and forth through time gathering elements of jazz and a range of contemporary styles. Breaking down the elements of the music reveals a fascinating cross-over that spans countries, time and cultures. The source is the rhythmic aspect, a layering of beats and counter beats both complex and sophisticated. The primary overlay is the use of a variety of ancient bows, uhadi, umrhubhe, umakhweyana, ikatara, all hand crafted and mastered by Luyolo. Once the percussive and ancestral stringed instruments have laid the foundation, the voice is free to explore the range, solo, in harmony, always in isiXhosa. Western instruments (such as guitar and brass) that have a history of being incorporated into traditional Southern African music melt easily into the mix. Even with these apparently opposed and diverse elements Luyolo’s music never sounds forced or contrived; it adheres to the natural flow of the musicians’ inspiration. Luyolo accompanies the songs on bows, lyrical self-taught guitar and provides vocals in a polyphonic style. Costumed with taste bordering on joyful eccentricity, this includes extravagant headdresses, and flowing robes. Luyolo’s music carries a message which emphasizes spirituality, humanity, humility, peace, optimism, unity, co-existence and progress as a way of living. The 7th January 2019 Luyolo released his awaited EP titled “Siphiwo Sam’’ on digital platforms allowing his fans in South Africa and abroad to gain access to his masterpiece, with a click of a button. Originating from the rich and fertile womb of Mdantsane Eastern Cape South Africa, Luyolo explicitly emits his latria for Xhosa culture and African spirituality in his album, drenched with exuberance and humility. ‘’ Siphiwo Sam’ ’consists of 5 songs each having a distinct and powerful message teleporting his audience to realms of deep spiritual connection, ancestral incantations and self-actualization.
